Pete sifuentes taught me how to install carpet and eventually worked for me for 23 years until he retired.
In 1980, after hurricane allen, i was installing and repairing carpet.
I had made enough money from water extraction work to go into business for myself.
Business turning point: at first, i operated the business out of my home from 1981 until 1995.
In 1995, my banker asked me to handle floor covering for three properties the bank was refurbishing.
That contract enabled me to buy a truckload of carpet and i was on my way.
I rented a building in 1996 and then bought land and built here in 1997.
Business philosophy: i believe in making an honest effort in everything i do.
People recognize and appreciate it.
The university helps but most of the young people leave town for jobs.
Older people come and stay.
We need to hold onto our young people, too.
Business is down about 40 percent because of the recession, combined with the explosion of the big box stores and the direct selling to the end user from the manufacturer.
We have expanded to now include carpet warehouse and have over 10,000 sq.
